Davenport, Iowa had installed the original sewer system servicing a food processing company and other customers in 1980. The sizes ranged up to 42" in diameter. In 1990 the line was replaced due to
excessive corrosion that had completely eroded the crown of the pipe. The city
elected to use the same pipe material for the replacement. However, again in
2000 the city experience the same decision of having to replace the 1990 line.
This time the city and its consulting engineer reviewed the two previous
installations.
Extensive corrosion testing was accomplished with all other available pipe materials. Only one material showed no corrosion at all, vitrified clay pipe. Manufacturers were also contacted with inquiry as to warranties of the various pipes. Only the manufacturers of one type of material would offer any warranty. The Vitrified Clay Pipe Industry's manufacturers all offered a 100 year guarantee! The city spent over $3,000,000 for the 2000 replacement alone. Can Clay supplied 42" NoBel® pipe with stainless steel bells for use by the contractor, Langman Construction. Today the City of Davenport continues to enjoy the efficiencies of vcp! There is no other product for sanitary sewers that performs as well as vitrified clay in the long run. Using vitrified clay pipe the first time always provides the lowest long term project costs. |
